Sample environments and sample handling

In high-throughput macromolecular X-ray crystallography sample handling is typically performed with a robotic arm.
Our sample gripper SG-1 can be attached to commonly used robotic systems, and allows to pick a sample from the
liquid nitrogen storage dewar, and place it on the crystallography goniometer.

Novel Gripping mechanism

  • Reduced gripping force compared to commonly used sample grippers
  • Flexure based mechanics guarantee high reliability and low maintenance
  • Compatible with SPINE- and ALS-type magnetic mounts
  • Customized arm lengths and mounting interfaces for different robotic arms available

Minimal heat transfer

  • Use of carbon fiber composite materials with low thermal conductivity
  • Lower operating costs due to reduced liquid nitrogen evaporation from the dewar vessel
  • Highest reliability by preventing ice buildup on the sample gripper

Integrated cooling

  • Continuous release of cold nitrogen gas from an integrated reservoir in the gripper head
  • Prevents ice formation on crystals in the gripper for > 2 min when the gripper is moved out of LN2
  • Allows repetitive sample mounting and demounting without significant ice buildup on the sample
